Center of Excellence

In 2016, NDTS Berks was designated as a Center of Excellence in the first phase of Governor Tom Wolf's initiative to mitigate the heroin epidemic affecting the state. The designation means that NDTS is able to provide "whole-person" focused services for those suffering from opioid use disorder.

The initiative is designed to help patients navigate the health care system with the Center of Excellence serving as a central hub. With the explicit goal of integrating substance use disorder treatment, behavioral health care, and primary care, Trained Care Managers assist patients manage their health and wellness by coordinating care across health care providers. Care Managers provide transportation to and from doctors offices, connect patients to community and social services, and encourage continued patient engagement in treatment. The initiative maximizes successful treatment outcomes by providing the supports necessary for patients to return to good physical and mental health.
